Background of the Study

Drought, a recurring environmental challenge in Nigeria’s northern regions, significantly affects livelihoods, agriculture, and water availability. Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, is highly vulnerable to drought, exacerbated by climate change, deforestation, and poor resource management. Communication plays a vital role in enhancing community resilience to drought by disseminating timely and actionable information, fostering local adaptation strategies, and building awareness about sustainable resource management. Development communication tools such as community radio, workshops, and social media platforms can effectively engage communities, empowering them to implement adaptive practices and mitigate drought impacts (Ahmed & Usman, 2023). This study investigates the role of communication in strengthening community resilience in Damaturu, exploring strategies that enable proactive responses to drought and long-term sustainability.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Drought poses severe socio-economic and environmental challenges in Damaturu LGA, often leaving communities ill-prepared to cope with its impacts. Inadequate communication and awareness regarding drought risk reduction have resulted in limited adoption of adaptive practices and sustainable resource management (Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2024). Although some interventions exist, they often lack the participatory and targeted communication necessary for effective community engagement. This study explores the critical role of communication in addressing these gaps, fostering resilience, and supporting sustainable development in drought-prone areas like Damaturu.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of communication in enhancing community resilience to drought in Damaturu LGA.

  2. To identify challenges in using communication for drought preparedness and adaptation.

  3. To assess the impact of participatory communication on community-led drought resilience initiatives.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does communication enhance community resilience to drought in Damaturu LGA?

  2. What challenges hinder effective communication for drought preparedness and adaptation?

  3. What is the impact of participatory communication on community-led drought resilience initiatives?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Communication significantly enhances community resilience to drought in Damaturu LGA.

  2. Challenges such as resource constraints and lack of access to information hinder effective communication.

  3. Participatory communication positively impacts community-led drought resilience initiatives.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study emphasizes the importance of development communication in mitigating the adverse effects of drought on vulnerable communities. By identifying effective communication strategies, it provides practical recommendations for policymakers, development organizations, and local authorities to foster resilience in drought-prone areas like Damaturu. The findings contribute to global and local discourses on climate adaptation and sustainable resource management.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Damaturu Local Government Area, Yobe State, focusing on the role of communication in enhancing community resilience to drought.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Development Communication: Strategic use of information dissemination and participatory methods to enhance drought preparedness and adaptation.

  2. Community Resilience: The ability of a community to anticipate, prepare for, and recover from drought impacts.

  3. Damaturu Local Government Area: A region in Yobe State highly vulnerable to drought and climate challenges.
